H-Minus Column

Fermilab used Cockcroft-Walton style electrostatic accelerators to give negatively charged Hydrogen ions a start upstream of the Linar accelerator (LINAC). This accelerator gave the ions 750,000 electron-Volts of energy by the time they left the column (at bottom). It has since been replaced by a much smaller and more reliable RFQ of the same output energy.
